Since 2010 I have been intervening in the Adelsheim Youth Prison together with artists from different disciplines. Most projects have been with singer, writer and stage director Paula Fünfeck, others have included choreographer and dancer Lina Höhne, Dirk Mestmacher, Annika Oser, Lydia Kappesser and Stephanie Schiller.
The word intervention means: to intervene, to interfere, to interrupt, but also to encourage and to intercede. The rule of law intervened in the lives of these young men and sent them to prison for a certain period of time because of a criminal offense. First shock, hatred, anger, but then: the Adelsheim Prison offers a wealth of practical and educational training, plus music is made there! Choir, instruments, classical music. »If I had taken part in something like this on the outside, my buddies would have killed me,« says one young man. Participation is voluntary. Once in, however, they work hard, up to 8 hours a day. The music is crisis intervention, art intervention and paradoxical intervention at the same time. For the last 10 years there have been Opera performances, concerts and choreographic works presented in Adelsheim, by its inmates in collaboration with professional artists.
